1 The Multimeter: The Auto Technician's Ultimate Weapon
You don't need a ₹10,000 oscilloscope for 90% of daily garage electrical diagnostics. A standard ₹350–₹800 Digital Multimeter capable of measuring DC Voltage (20V range), Resistance (Ohms / kOhms), and Continuity is all you need.
2 Test #1: The 5V ECU Reference & Ground Drop Test
Almost all engine sensors (TPS, MAP, Pressure, Rail, Bank Angle) require a clean 5.0V DC regulated power supply from the ECU.
How to Perform the Test:
- Turn vehicle ignition ON (Engine OFF). Unplug the sensor connector.
- Set multimeter to 20V DC. Touch the Black probe to solid battery negative (-).
- Probe the 5V reference pin with the Red probe.
• If 0V: Wire is broken or ECU power IC is blown.
• If 12V: Short to battery line! Do NOT plug a new sensor in or it will burn immediately.
3 Test #2: TPS Smooth Voltage Sweep Test (0.5V to 4.2V)
The Throttle Position Sensor is a potentiometer. Over time, friction wears out the carbon resistor track, causing dead spots during acceleration.
How to Perform the Test:
Back-probe the signal wire with the connector plugged in and ignition ON. Slowly turn the throttle from closed to wide-open.
• Closed Throttle: 0.45V – 0.65V DC
• Full Throttle: 4.0V – 4.5V DC
• Check: Voltage must rise smoothly. If it suddenly jumps or drops to 0V mid-way, the TPS track is worn out.
4 Test #3: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Resistance & AC Output
When an engine cranks continuously without generating a spark, the Crankshaft Pick-Up Coil (CKP) is the prime suspect.
How to Perform the Test:
Spec: 180Ω – 260Ω (Hero/Bajaj/TVS) | 800Ω – 1200Ω (Cars).
• AC Output Test: Set multimeter to 20V AC. Crank the engine with self-start.
Spec: Must generate 1.0V to 3.5V AC pulse. If 0V, sensor pick-up magnet is weak or air gap is too wide.
5 Test #4: Engine Coolant/Oil Temp NTC Thermistor Test
Temperature sensors are Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) resistors: As temperature rises, electrical resistance drops.
• Warm Engine (80°C): 250Ω – 350Ω
• If multimeter reads ∞ (Infinite / 1): Internal thermistor wire is open-circuit.
• If multimeter reads 0Ω: Sensor is internally shorted.
6 Test #5: Ignition Coil Primary & Secondary Winding Ohm Test
Ignition coils step up 12V into 25,000+ Volts to jump the spark plug gap. Overheating can cause internal insulation breakdown.
Spec: 0.8Ω – 1.8Ω.
• Secondary Winding: Set meter to 20kΩ. Measure from input terminal to spark plug cap.
Spec: 8.5kΩ – 15.0kΩ.
